Welcome
Ames Historic Preservation Commission
Who We Are
The Ames Historic Preservation Commission (AHPC) is a government commission of the city of Ames, Iowa. The AHPC reviews and makes recommendations on proposals for designating areas as historic districts; provides information within districts on preservation, renovation, rehabilitation, and reuse; holds hearings and reviews applications for new construction, alteration, demolition, or relocation of landmarks or property or structures within districts; and, reviews proposed zoning amendments that affect landmarks and districts. The commission is made up of residents of the city appointed by the Mayor and City Council with due regard to fields of knowledge relevant to their charge, including but not limited to, history, urban planning, architecture, archeology, law, and sociology. The AHPC regularly meets at 7:00 p.m. on the second Monday of each month.
West Ames Historical Study
The city of Ames and the Ames Historic Preservation Commission (AHPC) have retained the services of Will Page, Public Historian, to complete the first phase of the West Ames Historical Study. To help facilitate this project the AHPC is working with Iowa State University and EServer administrator Geoffrey Sauer, to create this collaborative content management system to encourage interested citizens to get involved with the research effort. Organizing and maintaining all the information in one place, online, will also greatly assist Mr. Page in his work. Our hope is that the residents of the study area, as well as other citizens interested in preservation, will take the time and effort to research properties, events, and so on and share their information, photographs, and stories here. You can view an example History and Research page to help you get started.
